Located at 930 metres above sea level, Rossinière in the Pays-d'Enhaut is characterised by numerous wooden chalets whose façades have been colourfully painted and artistically carved. This architectural heritage can be visited along a thematic hiking trail.
The most impressive chalet is the "Grand Chalet" with its enormous, ornately carved façade extending over five floors and pierced by 113 windows. It was completed in 1756 by an important cheese manufacturer, who set up several spacious cellars here for the packaging and storage of his cheese. In 1977, the painter Balthus (1908 - 2001) moved into the "Grand Chalet" with his family and received the most famous writers, painters and artists of the 20th century here.
Rossinière is also known among lovers of alpine flavours thanks to its "Jardin des Monts". In the mountain herb garden located on the alpine meadows of Mont-Dessous, the plants are terraced before being transformed into sugar juices, herbal teas and cosmetics.
From Rossinière station, trains on the Montreux-Bernese Oberland railway line MOB depart hourly (always on the half-hour) for Château-d'Oex and Rougemont. Trains also run hourly in the direction of Montreux and Lake Geneva.
