The Bremen Musicians, a marvellous tale by the Brothers Grimm
In Germany, in a village not far from Bremen, a miller lives with his donkey. The donkey is getting on in years, and his master decides to kill it to get its skin back. But the donkey sensed trouble and ran away at night. He decides to go to Bremen to become a musician. On the way, he meets a dog who is too old to hunt and whose master wants to get rid of him. The donkey offers to take the dog with him to Bremen to join the municipal orchestra. Further on, the donkey and the dog meet a cat and a rooster in the same situation as themselves, and offer to follow them on the road to Bremen.
One evening, the four animals discover a house inhabited by thieves. Determined to take their place, they devise a plan to get rid of the thieves: the donkey stands in front of the window of the house, the dog climbs on the donkey, the cat on the dog and the rooster on the cat. When they are all in place, they shout together, leap out of the window and the thieves, frightened, flee. After their disappearance, the four legged companions decide to move into the house.
The leader of the thieves later sends one of his men to see if they can recover the house. The animals attack and terrorise him in the dark. In the end, the animals take up permanent residence in the comfortable house. They won't be playing in Bremen.
