Route cantonale
1659 Rougemont
Explore the Church of Rougemont, a historical gem of Pays-d’Enhaut, where each stone tells of centuries past. Built in the 11th century by monks from the Abbey of Cluny for the Count of Gruyère, this Romanesque church in the shape of a Latin cross captivates with its simplicity and character. Take time to admire its stained glass and restored frescoes, each detail reflecting the devotion and artistry of the era. Originally dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra, the church has withstood the ages, becoming a Protestant temple after the Reformation imposed by the Bernese in 1555.
As you explore, be awed by the twelve massive pillars of the nave, symbolising the apostles, and the expanded chancel that gives the space a solemn elegance. The early 20th-century restoration restored this place to its former glory, revealing the original stonework and a rare vaulted wooden ceiling. The frescoes by painter Correvon, inspired by 13th-century motifs, still embellish the building today.
Beyond the Church, discover the charm of Rougemont, where numerous old chalets feature sculpted frontons and adorned facades. The tourist office offers guided tours to explore these treasures, leading you through the lanes of this preserved village. Don't miss the concerts and performances, particularly during the La Folia early music festival, which each year enlivens the temple and brings its walls to life over a weekend. Dive into this unique atmosphere and let yourself be carried away by the living heritage of Rougemont.
