Description
With its museum, themed route and numerous artists, the Pays-d'Enhaut is deservedly considered a stronghold of paper cutting.
Secular, but still current, the “découpage” or art of paper cutting is part of the living traditions of the Pays-d'Enhaut. Imported from the Orient, paper cutting found its Swiss home in the Pays-d'Enhaut, in the Vaud Alps, home of the fathers of this art: Johann Jakob Hauswirth (1809-1871) and Louis Saugy (1871-1953).
The two masters brought the use of scissors and paper to the highest level of perfection, far beyond pure craftsmanship. Their unique, decorative silhouettes show impressions of country life, alpine journeys and flowers or the magic of the worlds of children.
Over the years, Hauswirth and Saugy have perfected and constantly developed their art, this lively creativity is carried on through the work of the contemporary silhouette artists of the region, pushing ahead with their modern approaches in an enormous variety of designs. What is common to all silhouettes, however, is their filigree and expressiveness.
Discover and learn about this art from regional craftsmen. They open their workshops in order to pass on their passion or even to give courses in this historic but very much alive know-how.
The Pays-d'Enhaut Museum, Swiss centre for paper cutting (currently under renovation), invites you to discover this universe and the behind-the-scenes of this tradition that is more than a century old.
Two educational walks also take you through the streets of Rougemont with the thematic trail “Sur les traces du passé avec Louis Saugy” and in Château-d'Œx with the "Grand des Marques" quiz.
