5. Chestnut tree

Description

Remarkable trees walk

Some trees are traditionally planted in groups. It is believed that birch trees are planted in threes in front of houses to ward off bad luck. Chestnut trees are often found in pairs. The neighbour of the one you see in front of you has been eaten away by rot and has never been replaced. In the past, when the men handed in their belongings at the end of their military service, the authorities offered them a meal at the nearby arsenal. On their way home, they used to stop off at the Auberge de la Croix Blanche, just behind this chestnut tree. It was under this tree that their horses waited for them in the shade and it was also there that the men rested before returning home for good.
